Our first two days of travel

We finally left home yesterday morning at 11:00.  (My plans were for 8:00--I should have known better from past experience.)  I don't think we could have gotten anything else in the car.  Needless to say, we packed too much.  After one day, I'm ready to abandon some of the stuff on the side of the road.
Our drive through West Virginia was full of twists and turns, literally.  We are trying to stay away from the interstates as much as possible, so we drove across the mountains on Route 33.  One of the impressive things we saw were the Seneca Rocks.  Very dramatic.  And yes, I know the mountains in VA and WV are mere hills compared to what we will see in the western states!

If you want a good place to eat in Parkersburg, WV, try Jimmie Columbo's.   I think they make their ownmozzarella.  His wall of autographed photos was the best I've seen.

It was a late arrival at our hotel in Marysville,OH, but the beds were heavenly.  So were the cool breezes when we got out of the car.  We had to put on our jackets!

Thursday.
It was COLD when we went outside this morning! We passed many miles of farm land and lots of corn fields. Beautiful scenery.. Here's a colorful house across from our pit stop in Dunkirk Ohio. Should we paint our house this color??

We drove northwest through Ohio and into Indiana, up to Lake Michigan.  We stopped at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.  I wasn't sure if it would be worth the stop, but the lake was pretty and the sand dunes were impressive.  Maybe not as big as he ones at Kitty hawk, but certainly steeper.
Taking a breather on the way back up the dune.

It was odd for a nuclear plant to be just up the beach from the Nat'l. Park. I got my exercise walking up and down the dunes getting to the lake.  I was surprised at how clean the water was!

Our next challenge was the traffic around Chicago.  We were way outside the city (about 30 miles), but the traffic was still bumper to bumper in most areas. Thank goodness that Bill is a good navigator!
Our dinner stop tonight was Fatty's Grill and Pub in DeKalb, Illinois and our hotel is in Rochelle, IL.  this place is a local favorite and their fried Cajun tater salad (a fries option) is great.
The inside of Fatty's.  If you ate there much, the name would apply!
