Early in todays ride, we saw numerous herds of pronghorn grazing with cattle, but I think hunting season is kicking in on them. We stopped at Independence rock. For settlers headed to the west coast it was 1/3 the way from the Missouri river to the west coast.
Then we passed Crowheart Butte. It was nearby that the Eastern Shoshone chief defeated the Crow chief mano-a-mano for area hunting rights in 1866.
The Wind River ran between the road and the Butte. Here's a closer look at it right before we went through this pass.
Today was most remarkable for changing scenery. Here's some examples which make me wish I knew a little more geology:
We were greeted by buffalo a few miles outside of Jackson.

Wonderful, wide-open Wyoming. It was fascinating to see how the scenery changed every 20 miles or so. I think I could live out here and enjoy the view. This state also has vast open spaces. At one point, our car was the only thing for as far as the eye could see--at least 5 miles in any direction). When I saw the Teton Mountains, I was speechless. It was almost sunset when we drove near, so visibility was not so good. We plan to get an early start tomorrow because there is so much to see!
