Day 13 - Yellowstone to Cody.

This was our last day in Yellowstone.  Posted are photos from some of the remaining must-see features before departing by Silvan Pass to Cody. Motel-ing at mile-high elevation instead of 1.5 mile elevations of Yellowstone caldera has helped Beth  rest to get through the day.  The Dr had told Beth that elevations > 6000 feet interferes with sleep for many folk not accustomed to high elevation.

Mammoth Hot Springs is a number of terraces formed by mineral deposition.  The depositions range from white to colorful, and the springs are very active.  Here is a spring area that tops part of the upper terrace.

This photo of Lower Terrace  show the terrace formations

Orange Spring Mound Is a mini-terrace on the Upper Terrace.

We drove to Slough Campground to check out the wildlife.  Good scenery on the way.

Check out Silex Spring (blue).  Hot water bubbles up and supports heat-loving (thermophilic) bacteria which can live in water up to 167 F  You see the bacteria browns) in water flowing from the spring.  The .thermophyles secrete sulfuric acid which is rough on trees.

In Fountain Mudpot, there is fine clay bubbling up as mud and making various blobby formations.  This mud was formed underground as the acid from thermophilic bacteria dissolved  minerals, leaving the mud you see, which was bubbled up.  There are only a few of these geothermal mudpots in the world.
